CHAPTER 7

THE MURDER

The next ten minutes proved life-changing or rather life-ending for Michael Higgins. He went from alive to dead, from in his bedroom to on the pavement in the rain. Michael Higgins’s murder took place at exactly 8:46.

No one would admit to seeing Michael Higgins alive again after 8:40, when Sloan left him in his bedroom. Of course, one person did. The murderer. As of 8:40, the whereabouts of those in the house were as follows:

In the parlor, Liza sat watching and praying over Addison, who had yet to regain consciousness, and Joe, who was in a lot of pain, slipping in and out of consciousness.

In Michael’s office, Mike and Tara stood on top of Michael’s desk as they planned out how to recapture Zeus without getting bitten. Sloan had just left Michael’s room after having an altercation. He stood angrily in the hidden passage between Michael’s bedroom and the office.

Nikki was trying to regain her composure while she prepared the house for the unexpected onslaught of overnight guests. Luckily, the beds were all freshly made, but she carried towels into all the bathrooms and made sure to restock the toiletries and toilet paper.

Kieran was sitting cold and miserable in the rain. He didn’t have the guts to face Harris and tell him he hadn’t gone through with it.

Harris sat in front of the safe in the basement, staring at the numbers, a half-full bottle of wine in his hand. He’d already entered a ridiculous number of combinations. What would his father use? What numbers meant anything to him? Harris sat contemplating this in the moments before his father was murdered.
